Esteban Ocon and Alpine’s decision to part ways at the end of the year means Ocon is on the lookout for a new office, and the French manufacturer will feature a revised line-up in 2025. So, what does this all mean?

At first glance, the news of Ocon’s departure after five years with the Enstone team might seem like a reaction to his collision with teammate Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix. Alpine boss Bruno Famin was undeniably furious with Ocon after the incident.

Reports indicate that Ocon and Gasly were informed before qualifying in Monaco that team orders would be in effect during the Grand Prix. It was made clear that the driver behind on the grid was expected to support the driver ahead. This directive was reiterated before the race on Sunday. Therefore, Famin’s frustration is understandable when Ocon disregarded the instruction and attempted an ambitious move on Gasly in the first lap at Portier, resulting in damage to both cars and his own retirement.

However, while this was a significant moment, sources suggest that discussions about Ocon’s future had been ongoing for several months, with this latest incident being only part of the decision not to renew his contract.

This wasn’t the first time Ocon and Gasly had a close call. They went wheel to wheel for an entire lap in Miami, and Ocon has had multiple collisions with previous teammates Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez. Additionally, Alpine was aware that Ocon was exploring his options elsewhere on the grid, with Haas and Sauber/Audi particularly interested in recruiting him. Sometimes, change can be beneficial.

It is believed that Ocon was in Enstone on Thursday for a scheduled session in the simulator. Afterward, he met with Famin, where he was reportedly informed that his services would no longer be needed at the end of the season. The Frenchman released a statement the following day, confirming his participation in the Canadian Grand Prix and expressing his sadness over the negativity and abuse he received.

Alpine has stated they will announce their line-up in “due course” and are in talks with multiple drivers for a cockpit in 2025. Retaining Pierre Gasly is of significant interest to the team, given his speed and the continuity he would bring, although they are aware of his appeal to at least two other teams.

Reserve driver Jack Doohan is a serious contender for a race debut with Alpine next year. The team values him highly, recognizing his speed and popularity within the squad. Alpine is keen to demonstrate that its Driver Academy provides a genuine path to the top.

Additionally, 10-time race winner Valtteri Bottas is in contention for a seat at Alpine, though he is also sought after by Williams and Haas. Famin is reportedly interested in bringing the in-form Carlos Sainz back to Enstone, but it appears Sainz might join Williams or Sauber/Audi instead. Mick Schumacher, currently performing strongly for Alpine’s World Endurance Championship squad, is considered an outsider for an F1 return. With plenty of options, Alpine seems relaxed about finalizing its 2025 line-up.

Sauber/Audi and Haas have been pursuing Ocon for several months, eager to bring a race winner with his extensive experience on board as they aim to strengthen their positions in the midfield. Throughout this year, Ocon has often outperformed Gasly and delivered standout performances, including his win in Hungary in 2021 and a podium finish in Monaco last year.

Despite his history of tense relationships with teammates, Ocon’s speed and ability to deliver results are undeniable. Talks with Haas and Sauber/Audi about a multi-year deal from 2025 are ongoing. If he joins Haas, he will likely compete with Bottas for the seat. If he opts for Sauber/Audi, he will need to wait for Sainz’s decision.

In any case, Ocon is well-positioned to secure his place on the grid for 2025, albeit with a new team.
