Healthier Habits: Teens Opting for Ginger Shots Over Tequila Shots

Exploring the power of ginger shots and a more health-conscious generation

Teens opting for ginger shots over tequila shots

Members of Gen Z increasingly engage in health and wellness trends, especially through the social media platform TikTok. Many teens are swapping out tequila shots for something spicier: ginger shots. The desire to live a healthy lifestyle is rising amongst teens, as a zesty, health-boosting alternative is edging out the ultimate party shot.

What are Ginger Shots?

Ginger shots are concentrated beverages that are typically made from fresh ginger root. However, many are combined with other beneficial ingredients such as turmeric, cayenne pepper, orange, or lemon juice. Their strong and intense flavour draws many people to them, and they often consume these shots in small quantities of one to two ounces. Ginger shots are consumed as a quick, convenient way to include ginger’s health-promoting properties into a daily routine. Ginger shots, renowned for their potent anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, are rapidly becoming a trend and are regularly featured. This shift represents a broader trend toward wellness and mindfulness consumption. It shows how teens are mixing things up in their social scenes and embracing a healthier lifestyle.

Is TikTok Responsible for This Shift?

Many trends and “aesthetics” circulate amongst Gen-Z TikTok users, such as the ‘Clean Girl Aesthetic.’ The clean girl aesthetic has over 1 billion views through TikTok alone. In basic terms, this aesthetic is characterised by neatly slicked-back hair held in minimalistic claw clips, glowy skin, glossy lips, and gold hoops. Celebrities like Hailey Bieber have been at the centre of this trend. Still, multiple social media influencers have also started sharing their videos and tutorials on how to achieve this look. The desire for teens to look effortlessly polished or ‘clean’ is due to this widespread trend.

However, the Clean Girl Aesthetic goes beyond being just a simple beauty trend; it encompasses the way a girl lives her daily lifestyle. From morning matcha lattes to vibrant green juice smoothies— this trend promotes a lifestyle that, although it prioritises skincare and minimalist makeup, encourages teens to adopt healthier habits. As part of this aesthetic, ginger shots have gained popularity due to their detoxifying and immune-boosting benefits. Many TikTok users are sharing their homemade ginger shot recipes and demonstrating how this is now a part of their routine. Influencers have made these simple wellness practices seem irresistible, persuading teens to participate. This is a simple but effective way to enhance their overall health whilst aligning with the clean, healthy image that they aspire to.

Potential Benefits of Ginger Shots

So, I bet you’re wondering by now what all the fuss is about and whether there are any real benefits behind this health trend. Despite the name, ginger shots contain more beneficial ingredients than just ginger. Let’s break down the specific ingredients that transform your mind and body.

Ginger

Experts such as Haberstroah from Vogue state that ginger may act as a natural remedy for bloating. The main bioactive compound found in ginger is gingerol. She explains that this root can make it easier for food to digest. Scientific studies have proven that gingerol has strong anti-inflammatory properties that decrease the likelihood of gas and bloating. Ginger is an excellent remedy for colds and flu due to its natural pain-relieving properties that may alleviate sore throats. Ginger is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, keeping you happy and healthy!

Remember, all good things must be enjoyed in moderation, so limit yourself to 3-4 grams of ginger daily.

Turmeric

Healthline states that turmeric is one of the most effective supplements, with many of its benefits coming from its main active ingredient, curcumin. Turmeric is excellent for brain function and has a positive impact on memory, learning, and attention. Studies have shown that turmeric may help prevent cancer. Curcumin has been a beneficial herb in cancer treatment for contributing to the death of cancerous cells and reducing the spread of cancer, along with prevention purposes.

Despite these outstanding benefits, turmeric is not for everyone. Be sure to check any possible interactions with medications. Those with conditions such as diabetes, kidney problems, or bleeding disorders must consult a doctor before taking this herb.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne peppers are chili peppers with a hot and spicy flavouring due to the compound Capsaicin. These hot peppers are rich in vitamin A, a nutrient that is essential for growth and development, bone health, and vision. Research tells us that one 45-gram of chili pepper provides a large 72% of vitamin C, which is excellent for a functioning immune system.

You can use cayenne pepper as a bold and beneficial ingredient in many recipes. However, a high dose of cayenne peppers may have negative and possibly dangerous side effects in some individuals, such as high blood pressure and heartburn.

The Scientific Evidence Supporting the Effectiveness of Ginger Shots is Undeniable!

After three years at university, where my lifestyle mainly consisted of fast food and tequila shots, I found my immune system weakening— to no surprise! I decided to explore ways to boost my energy and start repairing the damage to my gut health and immune system (honestly, I was willing to try anything at this point). Celebrities such as Anna Kendrick raved about ginger shots and how they were “powered” by them, so I thought, why not give them a go? Eventually, I began making my own shots with raw ginger, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and black pepper. I must say these were spicy– but don’t get me wrong, I’m here for the fiery sensation.

I had a ginger shot every day for an entire month, and here’s what I observed…

Less Puffiness

This simple addition to my morning routine has made a visible difference to my skin after just a month’s use. I am always eager to try various skincare products to enhance my complexion, and I was surprised to discover that the true glow came from what I consumed. The usual morning puffiness around my eyes has diminished, and I’ve experienced fewer breakouts—particularly around that time of the month. A daily ginger shot has truly transformed my skin from the inside out.

More Energy

I have noticed a significant boost in my energy levels. Mornings, which used to be sluggish for me, now begin with a fiery burst of vitality that carries me through the day. Within the first few weeks, I felt naturally energised and more focused on tasks and my routine.

Goodbye, Sickness!

The biggest difference I noticed was the dramatic improvement in my immune system. As someone who frequently suffered from the common cold and relied on various supplements to boost my immune system, it was surprising to discover that such a small shot acted as a natural remedy. Now, when I start to feel unwell, a quick ginger shot prevents further symptoms. Adding ginger shots to my daily morning routine has been a game-changer, and I look forward to each morning for my next shot.
