Hair Care is trending. By now, everyone has sourced and crafted their skincare routine. With that settled, the desire for healthy hair follows suit. In the evolving world of beauty and personal care, trends come and go. While skincare has long been the darling of the industry, hair care is now stepping into the spotlight.

Searching “Hair Care” on TikTok and Instagram reveals numerous viral videos showcasing long, thick, and shiny hair. These videos offer routines and tips on achieving this healthy look. This trend has popularized the style, emphasizing the allure of healthy-looking hair and bringing attention to the science behind it.

The Rise of Hair Care

The rise of hair care is occurring for a number of reasons. Starting off with the focus on natural beauty, consumers are becoming more mindful of the ingredients they put on their bodies, leading to a demand for clean, natural hair care products. This parallels the clean beauty movement in skincare, where natural formulations are prioritized over synthetic chemicals.

Furthermore, hair is a powerful form of self-expression. From vibrant colors to intricate styles, people are using their hair to make statements about their personality and individuality.

Finally, the hair care movement reflects a broader theme of health and wellness. Individuals are increasingly viewing beauty as part of a holistic approach to wellness. Just as a healthy diet and exercise contribute to overall well-being, so too does taking care of one’s hair. This perspective drives interest in products that not only enhance appearance but also promote hair health from root to tip.

Hair Care Industry Response and Innovation

Recognizing this shift, beauty brands are expanding their hair care lines and investing in innovative products. From shampoos and conditioners tailored to specific hair types and concerns to treatments addressing scalp health, the variety and sophistication of hair care products have grown exponentially.

Moreover, technology is playing a significant role in the evolution of hair care. Advanced formulations, such as those incorporating biotechnology and natural extracts, promise better results without compromising sustainability or safety.

Social media plays a significant role as well. Creators are able to use TikTok and other media to promote their personal brands.

Routines

On TikTok and Instagram, the concept of “healthy hair” is portrayed and defined in various ways, influenced heavily by trends, influencers, and user-generated content. Common characteristics associated with “healthy hair” include shine, length, volume, texture, minimal damage, scalp health, color, and product recommendations.

Shine: Healthy hair is often depicted as having a natural shine and luster, indicating good hydration and smooth texture.

Length and Volume: Long, voluminous hair is frequently associated with the idea of healthy hair, suggesting strength and vitality.

Natural Texture: Embracing and enhancing one’s natural hair texture, whether curly, wavy, or straight, is celebrated as an additional sign of healthy hair.

Minimal Damage: Healthy hair is free from significant damage, such as split ends or breakage, and is achieved through proper care routines and gentle styling practices.

Scalp Health: There is a growing focus on scalp health as a foundation for healthy hair growth, with tips and products aimed at maintaining a balanced scalp environment.

Color and Style Versatility: While natural hair colors are appreciated, vibrant and creatively styled hair colors are equally popular, suggesting that healthy hair can still be versatile and expressive.

Product Recommendations: Influencers and users typically share their favorite hair care products and routines, highlighting natural ingredients, sustainability, and effectiveness in fulfilling healthy hair goals.

Healthy Hair

When it comes to haircare routines, everyone has their unique approach that works best for them. However, there are common steps, tips, and tricks shared by many creators on platforms like TikTok. Here’s a combined outline of steps you might find in various creators’ routines (and not in specific order):

Pre-Shampoo Treatment, Shampooing, and Conditioning: Many routines start with a pre-shampoo treatment, using oils or masks to nourish the hair before cleansing. After pre-shampooing, or to start, a gentle shampoo is recommended, with focus placed on massaging the product into the scalp to remove dirt and excess oils. Then, conditioner is applied to the lengths and ends of the hair to hydrate and detangle. Some TikTok routines feature techniques like “squish to condish” (squishing conditioner into the hair to enhance curls) for those with curly or wavy hair.

Next, Hair Masks, Treatments, Oiling, Styling Products, and Drying Techniques: Weekly treatments or masks are said to provide deep hydration, repair damage, or enhance hair strength. These may include DIY recipes or specific branded products. Depending on hair type and desired style, TikTok routines incorporate styling products such as mousses, gels, creams, or serums to define curls, add volume, or protect hair from heat styling. Techniques for drying hair vary widely. Some prefer air drying to minimize heat damage, while others use diffusers or heat styling tools with heat protectants. Adding finishing products like oils or shine sprays can enhance the overall look and texture of the hair.

Certain TikTok users share nighttime haircare routines, such as using silk pillowcases or applying overnight masks to promote hair health and manageability.

Genetics play a role too. What works for one person’s hair won’t work for all hair types — the solution to healthy hair is a journey to discover for each individual person.

Here’s a list of popular products:

Castor Oil, Rosemary Oil, Almond Oil, Black Seed Oil: Promotes hair growth and thickness.

Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3: A reparative treatment to strengthen and repair damaged hair.

Moroccanoil Treatment: A versatile oil treatment that conditions, adds shine, and improves manageability.

Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and Conditioner: Known for gentle cleansing and hydration, suitable for various hair types.

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Shampoo: Helps detoxify and cleanse the scalp, promoting scalp health.

Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair: A leave-in treatment that protects hair from heat styling and reduces breakage.

SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie: A popular choice for defining curls and reducing frizz in curly and wavy hair.

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum: Controls frizz and adds shine without weighing hair down.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density: A serum designed to support hair health and promote thicker-looking hair.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo: A favorite dry shampoo for extending styles between washes and adding volume.

TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray: A heat protectant spray that shields hair from heat damage during styling.

Looking Forward

As hair care continues to gain popularity, it’s clear that the trend is more than just a passing phase. It represents the shift in how people perceive and prioritize personal care. The future of beauty extends beyond healthy skin, encompassing beautiful hair that reflects individual style and well-being.

While skin care will always hold its place in the beauty industry, the spotlight is now on hair care. As we embrace this trend, we can expect continued innovation and evolution in the world of hair care, shaping the future of beauty for years to come.
